Memorial Day Weekend

The 19th Annual Gateway Classic Boomerang Hoo-Ha

-will be held next weekend, Memorial Day weekend, in the lovely town of Waterloo, Illinois. This year's tournament will be a laid back, local affair here in my little hometown.

The tournament will take place on the soccer field in front of Rogers Elementary School, 200 North Rogers Street, Waterloo, IL 62298. It is very easy to find (the town's not that big!) and directions are below.

On Saturday, we'll paint the field and have general practice and fun throwing, whatever people want to do. Saturday evening around 6:00, we'll head back to my house on the other side of Waterloo for some BBQ and beer and socializing.

On Sunday, the tournament will start with registration at 9:00 am, and the first event commencing around 10:00 am. We'll have a break for lunch, and there are plenty of options in this little town, or pack a lunch and stay put on the field. After the tournament, we'll hit one of the local haunts (I'm working on JV's, the quintessential small town tavern, which has a party room) for dinner, beverages, and awards.

Monday is wide open. In the past it's been mountain biking day or throw-at-the-Arch day, or whatever.

The field is pretty nice, but not quite big enough for a tournament. We'll use it anyway because it's free and close by! The only challenge will be Australian Round, which will be re-named Obstacle Round! Actually, it's clear within 40 meters in all directions. On either side of the field are soccer goals, but they are at about 53 meters distance. On one side there are two signs and a scoreboard at about 43 meters and just behind them a little shed. On the opposite side are some bleachers and a flagpole just outside the 40 meter line. None of this stuff is more than 10 or 12 feet tall (except the flagpole). At any rate, you'll want to be sure to know your rang's flight path before you throw it from the bull! And if the wind direction cooperates, they won't be a problem.

Other events are the standard events: trick catch/doubling, fast catch, accuracy, MTA, endurance. Since I anticipate a relatively light crowd this year, I want to try to keep people together as much as possible instead of having several little groups spread around the field. We'll have plenty of time, and this boosts the social factor.

I hope to see all you boomerangers here next weekend! Feel free to contact me with any comments or questions! Motel info and directions are below.
