8th Annual Southeastern Classic Boomerang Tournament

The Southeastern Classic Boomerang tournament returns for its 8th year on Saturday, April 21st.  Located just 30 minutes northwest of downtown Atlanta, the tournament will be at Al Bishop Softball Complex in Marietta, GA.  Detailed directions can be found at http://www.geocities.com/jesmucker/sec/.

The Southeastern Classic always attracts a variety of boomerang enthusiasts, from new throwers to world class members of the US boomerang team.  We strive to create an inclusive and welcoming experience, focusing on making sure everybody has fun. The experienced throwers encourage and coach the newer throwers, helping them to experience Boomerang Joy.  We'll offer training, we'll let you try throwing our boomerangs, we'll help you with the various events.  Just heed our one caution...

Warning: You may blow a fun gasket and leak enthusiasm!!!

The post-tournament awards dinner always features one of the great traditions of the Southeastern Classic: The Prize Pile. All throwers who are so inclined donate some boomerangs to the prize pile. Boomerangs are chosen from the prize pile, starting from the last place finisher and progressing on to the first place finisher. This is our way of encouraging the newer, the younger, and the less experienced throwers by equipping them with high quality boomerangs to develop their enjoyment of the sport of boomerangs.

Laura and I will also host a casual pre-tournament spaghetti dinner the night before the tournament around 7:00 PM on Friday, April 20.  Everybody is welcome to come share stories and reminisce about their favorite boomerang experiences.  Plus, the floor is always available to those who are looking for inexpensive accommodations.  If you need more than a patch of carpet, there are plenty of hotels around.  Give me a call or email me if you need some pointers finding a hotel.

Maps, directions, and more information can be found at http://www.geocities.com/jesmucker/sec/.  Or call me at 770-565-7256 for more information.

Stay Rad,
Jason Smucker

May
May 27th

The 20th Annual St. Louis Gateway Classic

will be held on Sunday, May 27th, 2007 in lovely Waterloo, Illinois.  Waterloo is located about 25 minutes from the Arch in downtown St. Louis.  The tournament will be held in Konarcik Park, where we will have the field and a pavilion reserved.  Waterloo is where we had the tourney last year (and where I live), and is a lovely small town with a handful of big-town amenities!  This year’s event will feature a (almost) regulation field.  No more snack trailer and equipment shed within the 50 meter circle!

On Saturday, we will meet at the field to throw, reminisce, and paint the lines.  Then Saturday evening, Angela and I will host everyone at our house for some barbeque and beer and socializing.

On Sunday, the tournament will kick off with registration at 9:00, and we’ll start the first event around 10:00.  There are plenty of local places to hit for the lunch break.  After the tournament, we’ll come back to my house for pizza or barbeque or something, awards, and more socializing.  Of course, since this is the St. Louis Gateway Classic, there will be plenty of trophies to go around.  No one leaves empty handed.

Monday is Memorial Day, and often impromptu events occur like throwing under the Arch, mountain biking, etc.

The order of events and the format will be determined later.  I sometimes like to change it up and throw in new events or something else to spice up the tired old USBA format.

There is a Super 8 motel in town if you need lodging nearby.  It would be the Waterloo, IL location if you call the national number or go to their Web site.  If you need the local info to make reservations directly, let me know.

This tournament is one of the longest running in the country, and is typically a laid-back, easy-going affair.    For information, contact Chicago Bob at (618) 939-9023 (home) or (618) 420-3273 (cell).  Email is chibob@htc.net.

Hope to see everyone here in May!

June

June 8th-10th

LD in BigD Long Distance Tournament.

The LD in BigD long distance boomerang tournament is a go.

June 8-10; the actual competition will be on Sat. & sun. with Friday as a warm-up day. In Dallas, of course :-) . It will be on the campus of Eastfield College, which is actually in Mesquite (3737 Motley Dr.) a suburb of Dallas; more details to come. This will be a great warm-up for the Natl's. And
gives us three LD tourneys this summer.

If you can only go to one, though, make it the Shoot-Out in Houston this October.

Only a few weeks away! The first LD tournament in Dallas is soon to
happen. At the moment, it appears we've got 13 or so if everyone
comes. For those that need a place to stay Friday or Saturday night,
I've got a recommendation. The Microtel Inn and Suites is just across
the highway from the field. Though it is adjacent to the college
campus, by the time you go across the bridge and to the far side of the
campus it's about half a mile but can be easily walked if you've a mind
to. I visited the property yesterday and, for the price, it's a good
deal. There are other area motels, but none so close. There's a
Crosslands a mile away but if it's like the Houston one this Microtel
seems nicer. They have a room for $35. The room isn't real big but has
one queen size and TV. They also have a suite with microwave and frig
(and two beds, I believe) for $70. Contact info: 3424 Sorrento Dr.,
Mesquite, Tx. 75150, (972) 682-0400, toll free (888) 771-7171,
www.microtelinn.com The motel is on the SW corner of Motley and I-30.
If you come out on Friday, I plan to have warm up from noon to 5pm,
then hot dogs on the grill and beer on ice at my place about 7:30.
Saturday night, again about 7:30, I've got us a reservation at Spring
Creek barbeque (which is my favorite). If you're in the area, wives,
girlfriends, husbands, all welcome but I ain't buyin'! :-)
Depending on the weather, I hope to do 3 rounds, maybe 4 on Saturday
but if it gets warm more likely 3. Hopefully 2 on Sunday. We'll have
bathroom access at the parking lot, just 300 yrds from the throw line.
Most everyone is from this area so just remember, sun screen, water and
perhaps a hat. I'd like to start at 9am Sat. morning so get there a
little early to warm up.
I hope to see everyone there!
David
