Challenge Throw
July 22, 2001
Marymoor Park
Redmond, Washington

Starting on June 16th, everyone with an interest to compete in this tournament could get an official blank from the tournament director. They had 5 weeks to get their blanks made into boomerangs. One boomerang, 4 events! Some absentee boomerang makers applied for a blank and competed in the design contest and a few players without booms used those sent in by the absentees.

Challenge Cup results:

3 new throwers, 1 with high potential.

Design Contest:
Looks Least Like the Blank - Doug DuFresne
Ugliest: Daniel Bower
Best Artwork: Just Plain Bud
Best Workmanship: John Villagra
Overall 1st place: Tie with 8 votes total (in all categories) each for John Villagra and Doug DuFresne

You can see the rest of the results on the attached spreadsheet, but the spreadsheet doesn't tell the whole story. For example, Will Gix had 22 catches in Endurance, but that was a perfect round as he only had time for 22 throws. Rick Sampson in his 60+ years had never caught a boomerang before his endurance round. Mark Eisner, age 14, with a nice boomerang from Stu Jones, came in 4th place in his first tournament. Watch for him on the 2006 World Cup team. Doug's 62 in Aussie Round was better than his score the day before in the Seattle Open with his choice of boomerangs. Dan Good had learned how to throw 2 days before the contest, but he was the only one to get a 10 point accuracy throw!

For Accuracy and Aussie Round, we didn't meet the minimum number of throwers to run the contests per USBA rules. Instead of dual throwing, we went with single throwing.

The official trophy, was awarded to Doug. It is a traveling trophy, so it goes to the winner of the next Challenge throw, tentatively scheduled for October 20th. This will be in a similar format: Design, Fast Catch, MTA and Trick Catch. I'll be making 3 pronged blanks for that soon, and the will be available by Sept. 15th.

Gel, Stu, John and Sarah all made boomerangs for other people to throw and KEEP for this contest. I'm betting John's will win some award at the USBA design contest. I'm going to work on getting more absentee boomerang makers for the next Challenge throw.
